Z-score Training and Assessment: A Norms-Based Approach to Neurofeedback

1-day Workshop – June 11, 2016

Instructor: Linda Walker, MHR, LPC, BCIA-EEG

Neurotherapy based on Z-scores – or norms – adds a significant treatment and assessment tool for the clinician. With proper implementation, the clinician might find the therapeutic process becomes more efficient and reduces treatment time. Further, Z-Score neurotherapy finds its strength in helping brain networks connect and work more efficiently, by training both power and connectivity. This workshop is an in-depth, clinical guide to the foundational concepts, research, assessment methods and training strategies using a norms-based approach. The workshop explores the correct evaluation of compensatory aspects, as well as de-regulation within the EEG, protocol selection based on the trainee’s symptom presentation and functional analysis of the EEG, proper thresholding and feedback strategies for trainee success, and methods to evaluate progress. In-depth case presentations will be shared for various disorders. Participants can also bring their own cases. The workshop will conclude with a hands-on Z-Score lab to practice core workshop concepts.

Learning goals:

The participant will be able to:

  1. Summarize Z-score foundations and research.
  2. Identify how Z-Scores relate to de-regulation in the EEG based on symptom presentation, morphology and raw statistics.
  3. Formulate training protocol based on Z-score assessment and client learning needs.
  4. Use thresholding and appropriate feedback strategies to facilitate client learning.
  5. Track progress using Z-Score trends.
