NEUROREGULATION FOR PATIENTS WITH TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY WEBINAR RECORDING

Presenters: Tanya Morosoli, MSc, BCN fellow

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the US and worldwide. Outcomes after a head injury are heterogeneous depending on the type, severity, and complexity of brain damage, but are also influenced by biopsychosocial pre-injury and post-injury factors. TBI underlies cognitive deficits, behavioral impairments and physical symptoms frequently becoming a chronic and challenging condition.Although more evidence is needed, neuroregulation tools (neurofeedback and photobiomodulation) may be among the most promising approaches to improve the functional recovery of TBI patients, comprehensively. In this webinar, a brief overview of TBI’s pathophysiology and the multiple factors that influence recovery will be provided. The assessment of sequelae and brain dysfunction through EEG, QEEG, neuropsychological assessment and validated scales and questionnaires, will be shortly described. The importance of a comprehensive assessment will be highlighted considering it leads to an individualized treatment plan, a more accurate monitoring of functional improvements and a pre- and post-intervention objective comparison. The personalized intervention includes the implementation of neuroregulation tools, cognitive neurorehabilitation and lifestyle recommendations for an improved outcome. Among these interventions, a more detailed review of the current evidence for different neurofeedback modalities and photobiomodulation will be provided and illustrated through a clinical example.

All views expressed in the recording are solely those of the presenter(s) and participants.

Learning Objectives

  • Become familiar with injury and non-injury related factors that influence long-term recovery from TBI underlying clinical heterogeneity.
  • Be informed of the current evidence supporting the clinical application of neurofeedback and photobiomodulation as part of a comprehensive management.
  • Understand the assessment and management of patients with prolonged TBI symptoms through clinical examples.
